Rainy, Sloomy Days lead to Buggy, Fishy Days!

By Justin Rivait  ·

If you're a fair weather fisher, the past week has been a little rough to sit through.

Here in the Midwest, we've had several storm systems roll through bringing a ton of rain and wind, which makes getting out on the water difficult for most.

Fortunately, there's a silver lining among all of this influx of water - a combination of warm temperatures and more abundant water means the insects have a ton of places to lay eggs and hatch. A combination of warmer waters and more insects means that fishing is going to be a lot easier to present dries and subsurface flies to rising fish.

It's also a great time to throw terrestrials on the water - as the intense rain and higher waters are washing plenty of ants, beetles, worms, and other land dwelling bugs into the lakes and streams.

A quick note about safety - remember to always wade or boat with proper safety equipment - a staff and personal flotation device may seem cumbersome, but they save lives. Make sure to have a good knife to cut yourself free from any snags. Never step into moving water you are unfamiliar with, and heed all safety messages and warnings. Always have a means of communication on you, and tell someone where you are going.

Stay safe out there and go catch some fish!
